The Township of Montclair has issued a notice about the potentially severe storm heading our way early next week. Due to the forecasted arrival of Hurricane Sandy sometime on Monday afternoon, October 29, and the storm’s possible duration of 48-72 hours or more, the township has announced that that refuse, recycling and leaf bag collection will be suspended during this period without additional notice:

Personnel assigned to refuse, recycling and leaf bag collection will be re-assigned to other storm related duties during this storm event. Throughout the duration of this storm DCS crews will be out working to address storm related issues including barricading flooded areas, clearing catch basins, clearing fallen trees from roadways, barricading fallen power lines, etc.

With regard to storm sewer catch basins, be advised that DCS crews will be working to clear catch basins but they will not be able to address all catch basins throughout the duration of the storm. To prevent or minimize flooding in your immediate area please clear leaves from any catch basins located in front of your house and check the catch basins regularly as they will continue to clog with leaf debris while it continues to rain.

Please note that the suspension is effective Monday afternoon, Oct. 29, and not before. Trash collection will proceed on schedule Monday morning.

The Township adds that the Montclair Office of Emergency Management is fully prepared to respond to any emergency that may arise from storm conditions: “The Emergency Operating Center will open if necessary to receive emergency calls (9-1-1). We will be working in concert with Community Services, the Police Department and PSE&G in the event of downed wires and loss of power.”

The town has also provided a list of important phone numbers:

  •  Call 9-1-1- for emergency situations.
  •  For non-emergency situations (e.g. basement flooding) call 973-744-1234. Pumping water out of basements: PLEASE NOTE that the Montclair Fire Department will respond to calls requesting basements to be pumped if basement flood water level is 6 inches or greater and the water is sewage-free.
