Sure, 2011 has a lot to offer, but sometimes it’s nice to step back in time and relive a bit of your youth. This weekend is the one to do it.

POSTPONED: Your time travel tonight “Back to The Future” will have to wait until next week. MIFF decided to postpone the screening until next Friday, August 5, because of impending storms.

On Friday night, you can go back to the future right here in Baristaville. Montclair International Film Festival screens the 1985 hit, Back to The Future under the stars of Church Street. Bring a chair and pretend you’re sitting in your own DeLoreon and enjoy the 80s and the 50s just like Marty McFly does.

For those in the SOMA area, you don’t want to miss The Kludge at Downtown After Sundown in South Orange’s Spiotta Park Saturday night. The local band brings you back in time with covers of 70s and 80s music, like Jimmy Buffet, The Cure, The Sex Pistols, but they state, “No Abba though, sorry about that.”  I like Abba, what’s wrong with Abba guys?

On Saturday night, travel back in time to Victorian England. Penny Penniworth takes a look at Dickens and Masterpiece Theatre in this satire where four actors play 14 roles. Soon, Penny finds herself penniless, left alone to make her way through a convoluted maze of strange relationships, anonymous benefactors and ultimate justice. This cult-favorite fringe comedy also channels D.H. Lawrence, Jane Austen, Mel Brooks, Monty Python and Sid Caesar.  It will be the best of times…

While you’re way back in time, why not check out the Pieces From the Past: Quilt Collection at The Montclair Historical Society on Sunday. This popular exhibit showcasing quilts from the 19th and 20th century was extended until Sunday, July 31.

Travel back, but stop at the 60s at Summer Concerts in Taylor Park in Millburn. The British Invasion Tribute will play all the hits from 1960s England. The band has been together since the 1980s and has toured the northeastern United States and internationally. Robert Murdock sings lead and backup vocals as well as playing the bass guitar and harmonica. bring your lawn chairs and/or picnic blanket and get groovy.

  1. Not saying that it’s wrong, but are you sure of that timeline ?
    I recall the 1980s as the Disco craze, and the dancing, and the
    big crystal ball hanging from the ceiling. Somehow Duran-Duran, The Go Goes, The Cure, INXS, Run DMC and the Sex Pistols, just does not seem “Disco” ! It seems Early to mid-1990s.

  2. I can assure Sandy, that Disco was 70s and the rest are 80s. I was born in 1973, so I lived it 😉

  3. One of these things is not like the other… Uh, Sex Pistols were long done by the time 1980 rolled around. Of course the fact that I found my way here to comment removes any thought of ‘cred’ I might’ve thought that I had! Enjoy the weekend anyway.

  4. I overlooked Sandy’s listing of The Sex Pistols in his comment, however in the post, the mention of The Sex Pistols says 70s and 80s:

  6. Yikes Sandy — you are WAYYY off! You should really check before making comments about things that likely happened before or close to the time you were born. Those of us who were in H.S. and college in the late 70s and 80s can probably recall down to the month what we listened to during those years. I for one saw Duran Duran in the fall of 1981 at the Savoy in NYC — it was their Girls on Film tour. Not one of the bands you mentioned had their beginnings in the 90s or even close! They’d all been around for for many years before so if you associate them with that decade then I suppose it’s a testament to their “longevity.”
