A reader who lives on Ridgewood Avenue near Brookdale Park writes that a gray cat turned up at her door looking for food.

It has been living under her deck for two weeks and is quite tame. The cat is declawed and wants to come into the house, but her own cat is very territorial and will not let it.

  1. A declawed cat roaming outdoors with no collar, living under a deck for two weeks. No one posted signs for a lost gray cat? Looks like another discarded critter to me. I’m taking care of 3 cats which were very obviously indoor pets at one time. Three loving, gentle creatures in need of someone to keep them safe and loved. It never ends because too many people just don’t care. I hope this guy finds a good home. He looks like my Spooky who was lucky enough to have found his forever home.

  2. He is such a cutie. I think more cat owners need to be educated about the dangers of letting domesticated cats outside unsupervised.

  3. Why don’t you contact PAWS/Montclair Animal Shelter or any of the other local agencies so they can get this kitty some shelter/vet care if necessary and possibly adopted? Somebody may have abandoned it outside…there’s a lot of that going on now due to the economic downturn.

  4. Nellie — I’m with you. I get so sad and angry
when I read these stories (but luckily some dog/cat owners are reunited with their pets thanks to Martta and Baristanet.
As Martta knows, I’m going through a terrible ordeal with my almost 13 year old Scottie (one of our three dogs). We’re going to lose him all too soon (two forms of cancer. Both fatal). I just can’t imagine that anyone — economic downtown or not — would even consider abandoning a pet (at least bring the pet to the shelter!).
This cat is so cute (what a pretty gray!) and looks very sweet. If one of my dogs (my Airedale) wasn’t “into” chasing squirrels (I’d never trust her with a cat), I would adopt this cat myself.
Kudos to the kind reader who has been feeding this cat. Good idea, ThePrimrose Path, about contacting local agencies to get the cat adopted (if he/she isn’t claimed).
    Sigh…
