The Montclair High School field hockey team was the underdog heading into the Group 4 state final on Saturday.

The top-seeded Mounties will take on 10th-seeded Phillipsburg at home at 2 p.m. A win at home would give the Montclair program its first title in nine years. The Mounties defeated Randolph that season to take the state sectional title.

To get another chance at Livingston, Montclair defeated third-seeded Morristown in a shootout, 0-0 (4-1), on Monday in Montclair at Fortunato Field.

The Mounties moved forward to the rematch with Morristown after dispatching seventh-seeded Fair Lawn, 5-1, on Thursday.

The fifth-seeded Mounties dominated 12th-seeded Passaic Tech, 3-0, in the first round of the North 1 Group 4 on Tuesday at home. Montclair (10-4) will travel to rival and fourth-seeded West Orange, on Friday (Nov. 8, 10 a.m.) in the state sectional quarterfinals.

The Montclair High School football team had the start they wanted to on Saturday in the state playoff opener but could not build on it the rest of the way.

Montclair Kimberley had a dominating second half and took care of Gill St. Bernard’s, 2-0, in the 2024 Prep B Tournament championship game in Montclair.

The Cougars and head coach Bill Wing swept all five flights in the two-day tournament culminating at Wardlaw-Hartridge in Edison on Oct. 22.

The fifth-seeded Mounties will take on fourth-seeded East Orange on Saturday (Nov. 2) at 2 p.m. at Paul Robeson Stadium 217 N. Clinton St. in East Orange in the first round of the North 1 Group 5

Despite the defeat Montclair played its best against the powerhouse Knights in several years.
